How to choose a wedding florist

18 November 2024

Your wedding florist has a massive impact on the look and feel of your wedding, and is arguably the most important wedding décor you’ll choose. But how do you decide? And, what sort of questions should you be asking your potential wedding florist before you book. We’ll explore in our guide.

Look at Recommendations

Choosing a wedding florist that comes highly recommended from happy couples is essential. By choosing a florist that has good reviews or recommendations, you’ll have confidence that the florist you choose has the expertise and experience to deliver your floral vision.

It’s also a good idea to speak to your wedding venue to see if they have examples of floral arrangements from other couples, not just for inspiration but they are likely to have recommended florists that they have worked with before, and trust, to meet or exceed your expectations.

Here at Eastnor Castle, we have a number of recommended wedding suppliers including;

  • Floral Roundabout: Based in Worcester, Floral Roundabout is an established florist with plenty of experience working with Eastnor Castle.
  • Oops-A-Daisy Ledbury Florist: Based in Malvern, Oops-A-Daisy has a wide range of designs available for floral bouquets, corsages and more.
  • The Fabulous Florist: Kat has been working as a florist for 20 years, with a focus on weddings. Based in Ledbury and has provided venue and bridal flowers for countless weddings.

Choose your Floral Style

Some of the key considerations for your floral style include:

  • Colour: Consider your wedding colour scheme when you choose your floral style. Are you looking for soft pastels, bold primary colours or something in between? Think about how the colours will go with your bridesmaid dresses and other décor.
  • Seasonality: Your florist can help advise which flowers are in season when you’re getting married. For example, spring includes flowers like Tulips, Lilac, Lily of the Valley and Peony. Whereas summer includes Roses, Sunflowers and Hydrangeas. In winter it might be more difficult for florists to get hold of certain flowers, however there are still plenty of options out there like Ranunculus and Amaryllis.
  • Formality: Do you want your flowers to look like they’ve been freshly picked, or looking for more a formal appearance? Your florist should be able to advise which look will suit the style of your wedding best.
  • Special Details: Ask your florist if they can cater for any special details you’d like to include in your floral arrangement, for example is there a specific flower you’d like to include that reminds you of a loved one? Or did you want something with a wow factor like a flower arch or wall.

We recommend making a Pinterest board of the type of flowers you really love, and sharing with your florist so that they can really understand what your vision looks and feels like. This way they’ll get a feel for your personal style and can advise the best options for your big day.

Check Availability

It goes without saying that you’ll need to make sure your wedding florist is available for your wedding. If they aren’t available, do they have other options or staff members that can arrange flowers for your big day or recommend an alternative florist they’ve worked with before.

Check the Budget

Let your florist know your ideal price for their services, and quite often they’ll be willing to work with you to ensure you get the look you want, within your budget. It’s important to note that there are a number of influencing factors that can impact the overall cost of your wedding flowers.

Seasonality has a big influence on price, as it costs a lot more to produce or ship flowers that are out of season from climates where they are in season. If you have your heart set on a particular flower, and it’s out of season, your florist may be able to offer you some similar alternatives.

Another factor that can impact the cost of your wedding flowers is the quality and quantity of the flowers you choose. It might work out cheaper if you choose the same type of flower in a higher quantity, rather than lots of different types of flower. This is because it’s often cheaper to order flowers in bulk.

You can also reuse flowers to lower costs, for example, the bridesmaid’s bouquets can double up as table décor, or ceremony flowers can be reused for the reception.
